Arafo

Municipality description

Arafo is situated in the east of the island of Tenerife and its territory occupies an area of 33,92 km2. Arafo has been granted several prizes and mentions for the cleanliness of its surroundings.

The volcano of Arafo, having last erupted in 1705, dominates a landscape crossed by the Barranco (ravine) de Añavingo, that is rich in Canarian flora. In the Cuesta del Estanque (Pond Slope) is situated the ethnographic site of Los Lavaderos, a public place with washing stones and a mill, declared artistic historical monument in 1984.

Symbols of Arafo

Flag

The Arafo Town Council, uses, unofficially, a dark red flag with the municipal coat of arms in the centre.

Coat-of-arms

The coat of arms of Arafo was granted by Decree 599/1975, 13th march.

Per fess. First, gold, on a closed book azure, a crozier in bend and a drawn heart gules. Second, gules, and bend argent. Bordure vert charged, in chief, with the legend Añavingo argent, and three grape bunches or, two in the flanks and one in the base. Ensigned with a royal crown, open. Under the base, a lyre and two laurel branches, or.

The first quarter shows the Augustinian Order’s coat of arms, since that order had an important monastery in the municipality's territory. The second quarter shows the arms of the Núñez family, founders of the town. The bunches symbolize the municipality's wine production. Añavingo is the name of the ravine that traditionally  supplied water to their inhabitants. The lyre is a reference to Arafo's music tradition
